Pan jam

What's the protocol with this?
PanPassing
Steelbands were on the street, particularly along Tragarete Road in Woodbrook, with small but loyal followers.
As a result, there were several "steelband jams" as the trucks with pannists crossed paths with the long trains of DJ trucks that provide the engine for costumed bands.
The protocol for those encounters was clear. The DJ's silenced their systems as the panmen rolled by, well except for a few, who "changed the rhythm out of respect," which meant that they drowned out the pans with a rhythm section instead of soca music.
But what happens when two steelbands cross paths?
Does the junior band lay down sticks out of respect for their elders or do both bands go silent and salute each other, perhaps with crossed sticks?
Isn't this a wonderful problem to have?
