Masala 101

Readers of BitDepth will know about my enjoyment of audiobooks, which I travel with on an ageing iPod jacked into my car radio's auxiliary port.
But on a long bit of driving in Tobago on Tuesday, I found myself skipping through stations on the rented Lancer's radio.
Based on that informal survey of much of what's on the air these days, I've got to give a big salute to Masala 101.1 FM, Marcel Mahabir's newest radio station.
Mahabir created the first Indo-Trinidadian focused radio station with Dik Henderson and brought that savvy to Masala, which plays almost anything with a good beat.
This is unquestionably an Indian radio station, but with a careful choice of chutney and filmi music mixed in with more familiar pop songs, Masala offers a seductive route to understanding modern Indian and chutney music.
The website offers a link to a web feed of the broadcast, but there's a second site here offers a programme schedule and more information about the station's personalities.
According to the information there, I probably caught the tail end of Nicole's (probably Programme Director Nicole Gyan) Disc Drive and the start of a couple of hours worth of Adesh.
If you'd like to try a station that's engagingly confident in its commitment to great music tune in locally or try the web feed.
There's also a lively forum that offers wide-ranging and sometimes dramatically adult discussions.
