George's best joke

George John, who passed away two weeks ago, was widely regarded as a smart and funny man. But his wit was almost strictly situational. I'm sure he told some jokes, but he was at his best when he related stories and he was positively incandescent when his wit met the right situation.

For me, that was almost thirty years ago, at the beginning of my career, when I saw George in peak form deliver a witticism that I am unashamed to say, I have co-opted on at least one occasion with no attribution.

I was sitting at the Express Features Desk as Kitty Hannays looked over a story I’d brought in. The Features desk then was Joan Christopher and Skye Hernandez, who were both looking great that day.

George, who loved people, enjoyed young people and always enjoyed the company young female people, came over to the desk looked around with an appreciative smile and declared; “Kitty, my rod and thy staff, they comfort me.”
